ABOUT THE DIVISION

Multilateral Affairs Division (MAD) is one of the 7 divisions within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration. MAD covers the areas beyond Asia and the Pacific, including matters pertaining to parent international organizations such as the United Nations and Commonwealth and their various agencies. In this respect, the Division serves as the focal point for communications with countries beyond Asia, the Pacific and international organizations that Kiribati is a member.

MAD has an overall staff of 5 composed of the Director of Multilateral Affairs, the Deputy Director, and 3 Desk Officers.

MAD works in alignment with the Kiribati Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New
York.

  1. Role and Functions
  • Maintaining and strengthening Kiribati’s relations with countries outside Asia-Pacific including international organizations.
  • Promoting the representation of Kiribati and advocating national priorities within international organizations of which Kiribati is a member.
  • Compile information on election requests from countries to international organizations.
   2. The Republic of Kiribati Diplomatic Relations
  • The Government of the Republic of Kiribati has established relations with 91 countries to date.
  • Out of the 91, 62 countries are under the portfolio of MAD.
  • Through the Multilateral Affairs Division, Kiribati is also a member and/or has relations with several international Governmental Organizations. To name a few: The United Nations and its agencies, Commonwealth, the World Bank, and the Asian Development
    Bank.
